At Knox-Met, there are a number of ways in which you can join others in the Christian experience beyond Sunday morning worship.  Listed here are both special events planned for the season, and ongoing programs in which all can participate.  Watch The Morning Glory bulletin insert for further information.

SPECIAL WINTER/SPRING EVENTS

 

Inside Disaster Haiti

Part 1: Sunday, January 8

Part 2: Sunday February 5

Lunch: 12 noon (freewill offering)

Film and discussion 12:30-1:45 pm

With first-hand knowledge of the Haiti relief effort after the devastating earthquake of a year ago, Dennis Filips takes us through the crucial steps of the Red Cross emergency response over a six- month period. Using videos and discussion, we relive the tragedy of the event, as well as the aftermath involving rescue, massive cleaning efforts, and the mere survival of over 1.5 million homeless citizens.  Not to be missed!

The United Voices of Edmonton England Tour, Summer 2011

Sunday, January 15

Slides and discussion: 12:30 – 1:30 pm

Members of the Knox-Met Choir will present a summary of the UVE’s exciting tour this past summer, with stops at Bath Abbey, Oxford, and a week-long residency at Gloucester Cathedral.

 

Lenten Pancake Brunch

Sunday, February 26, following worship

The gym is the place to be for a meal of delicious pancakes served up by a terrific team of flapjackers.  (Join the fun and volunteer!)  Tickets are sold, which benefit the Inner City Pastoral Ministry.

Lenten Film Series

Three Sundays, March 4, 11, 18, 6:30 pm

Now in its 11th Lenten season!  Join Jack and Lori in the church lounge for three exciting and challenging films on the theme “Family Dynamics.”  Bring your views and your opinions, we’ll provide the licorice!

Faith Enrichment Sundays

Five Sundays, March, 4, 11, 18, April 15, 22

Lunch: 12 noon (freewill offering)

DVD and discussion: 12:30-1:30 pm

Our series continues from the fall with five interactive sessions during Lent and Easter based on Walter Brueggemann’s thought-provoking DVD presentations entitled “Countering the Pharaoh’s Production-Consumption Society Today.”  Faith Enrichment Sundays are of spiritual interest to all within our congregation, and are ideal as a part of the preparation for faith formation, confirmation, or renewal of baptism for adults.

9th Street Players Spring Play: Charley’s Aunt by Brandon Thomas

June 1, 2 (evening), June 3 (matinee)

A delightful way to round out the season!  The Players will charm you with their 22nd annual live theatre production, featuring this classic, hilarious romp about mistaken identities!  Fun for the whole family!  Directed by Elizabeth Johannson.

Tickets go on sale in May.  Watch for posters and further announcements.

 

 

ONGOING PROGRAMS

 

Church School

A strong team of parent-teachers dedicate themselves each week to the fostering of Christian education for children.  Classes for age 3 to Grade 6 meet on Sunday mornings, and also engage in fundraising activities each Advent and Lenten season.  Our nursery welcomes small children, where parents can remain during worship if they wish.  Registration is ongoing.

Youth Group

Junior and senior high-school-aged youth gather with Camille each Sunday for a time of fun and spiritual practice.  City-wide activities also take place at various times.  Forming part of the Sunday meetings this term will be interactive instruction with a view towards confirmation in the United Church.  Join our Facebook Group: Knox-Met Youth.

Knox-Met Women’s Group

A long-standing institution with its roots in the UCW (United Church Women) and its antecedents, this friendly group meets on the second Monday of every month at 1:30 pm.  It plans a special program each month, and offers a ministry of hospitality for events throughout the year such as weddings, funerals and special services for shut-ins.

Knox-Met Choir

This SATB ensemble leads music in Sunday worship with hymns and anthems in a variety of styles, and performs a major choral work with orchestra each spring.  Practices are Thursday evenings, 7:30-9:30.

The Gathering

Anyone is welcome to join this ad hoc choir as it gathers informally on specified Saturday mornings at 11 am to learn a piece of contemporary music to sing in worship the next day.

Winter/spring Sundays are January 22 and April 1.

Chancel Ringers

This dedicated bell choir meets Tuesdays at 7:15 pm, and participates regularly in worship services.

9th Street Players

Knox-Met’s resident drama group interprets God’s word through dramatic scenes in worship, and performs a major secular production annually.  There is a role especially for you!  Meetings are announced in The Morning Glory.

Exercise Program for Seniors

Exercise with other seniors each Tuesday from 1:30 to 2:30 pm.  The class includes walking, strength work and stretching.

Men’s Breakfast

A popular series of stimulating Saturday morning breakfast talks to which all (male and female) are welcome!  Tickets are on sale following worship on three successive Sundays prior to each breakfast.

Dates and speakers are March 3 (Coln O’Carroll) and April 28 (Jim Stewart).

Women’s Breakfast

Join other women from Knox-Met at the Upper Crust Café (10909-86th Avenue) on the second Saturday of alternate months at 9:30 am for breakfast and great conversation with Jean Greenhill and Kathie Reith.

Winter/spring dates are January 14, March 10 and May 12.

Wonder Café

Connect with friends in the Church Library (off the Narthex) Sundays at 10 am over a hot cup of coffee before worship.  Browse through our collection of spiritual books and books for children.  All are welcome.
