COMMITTEES AT KNOX-METROPOLITAN
2011
There are five
main committees at Knox-Met.
Following is a brief description of each one.
Committee on
Christian Teaching and Learning
This committee looks after the educational and social
programs of the church beyond what happens in worship.
- Educational
and social programs to meet the faith needs of the congregation
- Church
school and youth groups
- Programs
include Bible studies, seminars, film nights and discussion groups.
- Oversees
Church library and archives.
- We
publish the brochure Expanding Your
Sunday Morning Experience twice a year, which outlines all programs
within the church.
- The
committee typically meets four times a year,
- Hosts
“Information Sunday” in September, which showcases our committees and programs.
- Church
School Teachers’ appreciation breakfast in June.
Current members are Bob Klakowich
(Chair), Heather Buckie (Secretary), Sandra Hawes,
Jack Jervis, Steven Johann (Minister) and Camille Kamphuis
(Youth Worker).

Committee on Worship
Worship is central to the life of our congregation, allowing
us to continuously grow and develop spiritually and to connect with each other.
This committee provides leadership and opportunities for many to participate
and benefit in our celebration of our Christian faith:
- Plan
and co-ordinate worship.
- Co-ordinate
the Sunday morning volunteer teams. These teams
do everything from greeting people at the door to handing out programs. (see Sunday volunteer team description).
- When
the minister is away, this committee co-ordinates worship.
- Develop
music policies and coordinate music-related activities
- Co-ordinate
Communion.
- Relationship
with other churches and facilities, including worship services at places
like Garneau Hall, St. Paul’s
in summer.
Who to contact: Katharine Moore is interim chair of
Worship, along with Marg McKenzie. Lori Stewart will
take the chair of Worship in the fall.
Committee on Community and World Service
Our Christian faith calls us to love and serve others, to
live with respect in creation and
to seek justice.
This Committee provides leadership and opportunities in living our faith beyond
our Church building in many different ways
General roles
and responsibilities:
- Co-ordinate
pastoral care/hospital visiting/congregational care (e.g. Easter flowers,
cookies to shut-ins).
- Ensure
effective communication (weekly bulletin Morning Glory, pew cards, newsletter, photo directory and web
site), as well as media liaison.
- financial
support/special appeals and direct service in our local community, the
City of Edmonton
and further a field.
- Establish
ad hoc service committees as needed, such as the Refugee Support
sub-committee.
- Promote
the Mission
and Service Fund.
- Conduct
appeals related to community and world outreach.

Committee on Property
and Finance
This committee looks after the financial and physical
resources donated by our members, past, present and future.
General roles
and responsibilities:
- Care
for, and control the use of, the physical building.
- Support
work groups to do specific tasks.
- Hire
Office Administrator and Custodian in co-ordination with M&P Committee
- Monitor
and account for finances.
- Co-ordinate
and promote financial stewardship initiatives.
- Submit
forms to Presbytery (M & S and annual financial statistical report).
- Participate
on the Memorials Sub-committee, and Ad Hoc Bequest Committee.
- Ensure
legal responsibilities relating to property and finance are fulfilled – CRA,
insurance for building and directors, salary and benefits payment.
- Conduct
appeals related to church repairs and needs.
- Receive
and send communication from and with Edmonton Presbytery and the United
Church of Canada regarding financial matters.
(Stewardship Committee)

Cultivate a sense of Christian
stewardship among members and adherents as individuals.

Promote and encourage congregational
ownership of stewardship goals.
·
Foster the membership’s offerings of
time, talent and money, to meet this congregation’s goals. Methods may include covenanting cards and
visitations.

Effect communication between the Church
board, Memorials Committee, and deliver reports of the Memorials Committee.

Promote an implement the programs of
stewardship and planning of the Untied Church of Canada.

Committee on Ministry and
Personnel
As an employer, the church needs to monitor the working
conditions and compensation provided to the staff. It is important to ensure
that the staff members are working effectively.
General roles
and responsibilities:
- Address
all matters related to staffing of ministry personnel, including the
Minister and Youth Worker.
- Conduct
annual reviews for all staff.
- Participate
in committees as appropriate (Joint Search and Selection, Transition,
Joint Needs Assessment).
